It's been real, Blogger.
You're clunky, weird and obsolete. Your fonts and font size change mid-post without warning, and don't show up until after you hit "Publish". For awhile, you froze every time I tried to type in Mandarin. Your paragraph spacing is weird and your quote button barely works.
Over time, the photos I added are made to look smaller than intended, or disappear completely. Everything I had on Photobucket is gone, because I moved to Flickr and didn't want to pay for both or re-upload to old posts. But, your storage capacity didn't allow me to add any more photos directly to Blogger, so you helped me screw myself, visually speaking.
I feel like I'm the only person left on Blogger, and I haven't liked it for years. It was more a habit than a choice, and I wasn't sure what to do next. A friend suggested I get my own site, but I'm way too lazy with my free blog to set up a whole thing, pay for something to build it with, maintain a domain etc. etc. All that work put me off the whole idea of moving for a few years.
Substack is just an easier choice. It's another platform, but seems to be a better-maintained one. I've only posted once, but haven't had to go back and fix weird problems with photos or font. I haven't figured out captions yet but don't care much.
People move to Substack because it's easy to monetize, but I'm committed to keeping Lao Ren Cha free. I might turn on paid subscriptions as an optional thing, but I can't imagine putting my blogging content behind a paywall.
Anyway, go check out my first post, about my trip to Orchid Island last week compared to my visit in 2012.
If you subscribe here or even check regularly, do me a favor and subscribe over there.
